Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp provided a downbeat update on Mohamed Salah’s injury status after he was forced off at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Thursday. The Egyptian winger has already spoken with the Reds boss, who believes there is ‘definitely something’ wrong as he faces a nervous wait for more information.
Losing Salah midway through a Premier League title race was already bad enough for Klopp. The 31-year-old is by far and away Liverpool’s top scorer this season and will miss four more league games if Egypt make it to the AFCON semi-finals.
The outlook now looks even more bleak for the Reds, however, after Salah had to be substituted during Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana on Thursday evening. The flying forward indicated to medical staff that he could not continue during added time in the first half.
There was a hint of promise for Liverpool supporters when Salah was filmed with a smile on his face walking relatively freely through the mixed media zone after the game, but having spoken with the player, Klopp is not particularly optimistic.
“We don’t know anything,” he admitted during his Liverpool press conference on Friday morning. “We spoke last night and there was an assessment, they will do that and we will know more.
“At that moment he was shocked and couldn’t see why he was hit by something so intense. He felt it and we know how rarely Mo goes off so it is definitely something but I don’t have any more [info]. There will be an ultrasound and MRI and then we will see.”
